The Marathi Calendar is a lunisolar calendar used across Maharashtra, following the Shalivahana Shaka Samvat era. The new year is celebrated as Gudi Padwa on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada — the same day as Telugu Ugadi and Karnataka Yugadi.
मराठी पंचांग चन्द्र-सौर है — शालिवाहन शक संवत् पर आधारित। नववर्ष गुड़ी पाडवा चैत्र शुक्ल प्रतिपदा को मनाया जाता है।
The Marathi Calendar follows the Chandramana (lunisolar) Shalivahana Shaka tradition. It is one of the most widely-followed calendars among Marathi-speaking Hindus, with deep roots in the Maratha empire's administrative tradition. The most distinctive Marathi cultural marker is Gudi Padwa — a brilliantly celebrated New Year where households erect a 'Gudi' (a decorated bamboo with a copper pot) outside their homes as a victory symbol. The 11-day Ganesh Chaturthi celebration in Maharashtra is the world's largest, with grand pandals at Lalbaugcha Raja, Dagdusheth Halwai, and others.

Marathi New Year. Households erect a 'Gudi' (bamboo decorated with copper pot, neem leaves, sugar garland, silk cloth) — symbolizing victory and welcoming the new year. Considered one of the 3.5 most auspicious muhurat days (Sade Teen Muhurat).
The world's largest Ganesha festival. Public pandals (Lalbaugcha Raja, Dagdusheth Halwai, GSB Wadala) draw millions. Founded as a public movement by Lokmanya Tilak in 1893.
Centuries-old pilgrimage to Vithoba (Vitthal) at Pandharpur. Lakhs of warkaris walk hundreds of kilometers carrying palkhis of saints (Tukaram, Dnyaneshwar) — converging at Pandharpur on Ekadashi.
Newly married women observe Mangala Gauri vrat on all Tuesdays of Shravan for husband's longevity and family welfare.
Maharashtrian married women observe Vat Savitri on Purnima (most North India observes on Amavasya). Women circumambulate the banyan tree (Vat) tying threads, praying for husband's longevity.
Birthday of Lord Dattatreya — highly significant in Maharashtra (Dattatreya is considered Maharashtra's adi-guru). Audumbar, Narsobawadi, Ganagapur — the famous Datta tirthas — see massive gatherings.
Gudi Padwa 2026 falls on Friday, March 20, 2026 (Chaitra Shukla Pratipada) — Marathi New Year and the start of Shaka Samvat 1948.
Chaitra, Vaishakh, Jyeshtha, Ashadh, Shravan, Bhadrapad, Ashwin, Kartik, Margashirsha, Paush, Magh, Phalgun — same as the standard Hindu lunisolar months but written in Marathi (Devanagari) script.
The 3.5 (Sade Teen) most auspicious muhurat days in the Marathi calendar when any new venture begun is automatically auspicious — no separate muhurat calculation needed: Gudi Padwa, Akshaya Tritiya, Vijayadashami (Dussehra), and half of Diwali Padwa (Bali Pratipada). These are when most weddings, business launches, and major purchases happen.
Ganesh Chaturthi 2026 falls on Friday, September 11, 2026 (Bhadrapad Shukla Chaturthi). The 11-day festival ends with Anant Chaturdashi visarjan on September 21, 2026.
The Gudi (a bamboo with inverted copper/silver pot, decorated with neem, sugar garland, and silk cloth) symbolizes victory — Lord Rama's return from exile, Shalivahana's victory over the Shakas, and the triumph of dharma. It is raised at sunrise on Chaitra 1, prayed to, and brought down by sunset.
