What is Muhurat? मुहूर्त

Muhurat (also spelled Muhurta) is the ancient Vedic science of electional astrology — the art of choosing the right moment to begin an important activity. The word comes from Sanskrit: Muhu (moment) + Rta (cosmic order), meaning a moment aligned with the natural rhythm of the cosmos.

In Vedic tradition, every moment carries its own planetary signature. Just as a person's birth chart is determined by the time of their birth, every new undertaking — a marriage, a journey, a business launch — acquires its own "birth chart" at the moment it begins. A well-chosen muhurat places favorable planets in strong houses, ensuring the activity starts with cosmic support rather than resistance.

The classical text Brihat Samhita by Varahamihira, Muhurta Chintamani by Daivagna Rama, and Kalaprakashika lay down detailed rules for selecting auspicious times. ShreeKundli's muhurat engine applies these rules computationally — evaluating every day of the month against the specific criteria for each event type.

The Five Pillars of Muhurat Selection

A proper muhurat evaluation considers five interconnected elements of the Panchang. A day is auspicious only when all five align favorably for the specific event in question:

01

Tithi तिथि — Lunar Day

The angular distance between Sun and Moon creates 30 tithis per lunar month. Rikta Tithis (4th, 9th, 14th) are universally avoided. Purnima (full moon) favors celebrations, while specific tithis like Dwitiya and Dasami are considered broadly auspicious. Each event type has its own set of preferred and prohibited tithis.

02

Nakshatra नक्षत्र — Lunar Mansion

The 27 nakshatras are the backbone of muhurat selection. Fixed nakshatras (Rohini, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada) are ideal for permanent activities like marriage or building. Movable nakshatras (Ashwini, Punarvasu, Swati, Shravana) suit travel and change. Fierce nakshatras (Bharani, Moola, Ardra) are generally avoided.

03

Yoga योग — Lunisolar Combination

There are 27 yogas formed by the combined longitude of Sun and Moon. Vyatipata and Vaidhriti yogas are universally inauspicious and avoided for all muhurat purposes. Siddha, Amrita, and Shubha yogas are particularly favorable and add positive weight to the day's score.

04

Karana करण — Half-Tithi

Each tithi is divided into two karanas, giving 60 karanas per lunar month. Vishti Karana (also called Bhadra) is the most inauspicious — activities begun during Vishti tend to face obstacles and delays. Bava, Balava, and Kaulava karanas are considered favorable for most events.

05

Vara वार — Weekday

Each weekday is ruled by a planet whose energy influences activities. Monday (Moon) and Wednesday (Mercury) are broadly auspicious. Friday (Venus) favors marriage and celebrations. Tuesday (Mars) and Saturday (Saturn) are generally avoided for new beginnings, though they suit specific activities like surgery or property-related work.

When Muhurat Matters Most

Marriage & Engagement

The most elaborate muhurat selection. Fixed nakshatras, Shukla Paksha tithis, and absence of Manglik Dosha or Bhadra are essential. A well-chosen vivah muhurat is believed to shape the entire married life.

Griha Pravesh

Entering a new home for the first time requires careful timing. Jupiter and Venus should not be combust, and the chosen nakshatra should be fixed or soft. Uttarayan (Sun's northward journey) is preferred.

Vehicle Purchase

Buying a vehicle on an auspicious day ensures safety and longevity. Nakshatras like Ashwini, Rohini, and Pushya are preferred. Tuesday and Saturday are traditionally avoided for vehicle delivery.

Business & New Ventures

Launching a business, signing agreements, or inaugurating an office. Labh-oriented nakshatras (Pushya, Revati, Anuradha) and Wednesday or Thursday are ideal. Avoid Amavasya and Rikta Tithis.

Education & Learning

Starting formal education, enrolling in a course, or beginning Vidyarambha (first writing). Mercury-ruled nakshatras (Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, Revati) and Wednesday are particularly favorable for intellectual pursuits.

Wearing Gemstones

Each gemstone has a ruling planet and should be worn on the planet's day during a favorable hora. The nakshatra should align with the gemstone's energy — for example, Ruby during Sun-ruled nakshatras.

What Makes a Day Inauspicious?

Not every day on the calendar is suitable for important activities. Vedic texts identify several universally inauspicious combinations that are best avoided regardless of the event type:

Rikta Tithi

4th, 9th, and 14th tithis are considered empty or barren — new activities started on these days lack sustaining energy.

Vishti / Bhadra Karana

Activities begun during Vishti Karana face delays, obstructions, and failures. Universally avoided in all muhurat systems.

Vyatipata & Vaidhriti Yoga

These two yogas are classified as "maha dosha" — great fault. All significant activities should be avoided when these prevail.

Amavasya

The new moon day (Amavasya) carries minimal lunar energy. Except for Pitru Tarpana, most new beginnings are avoided on this day.

Eclipses (Grahan)

Solar and lunar eclipses create a period of cosmic disruption. No auspicious activity should be initiated during or immediately after an eclipse.

Fierce Nakshatras

Bharani, Krittika, Ardra, Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, and Moola carry intense or destructive energy. Avoided for celebrations and beginnings.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Muhurat in Vedic Astrology?
Muhurat (Muhurta) is the Vedic science of electional astrology — selecting the most favorable date and time to begin an important activity. It evaluates the five elements of the Panchang (Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana, Vara) along with planetary positions to determine whether a moment is cosmically supportive for a specific undertaking. The tradition dates back thousands of years and is documented extensively in texts like Muhurta Chintamani and Brihat Samhita.
Why does Muhurat matter for life events?
Vedic astrology holds that every new beginning acquires its own "birth chart" at the moment it starts. A marriage ceremony, a business launch, or entering a new home — each inherits the planetary energy of its starting moment. A well-chosen muhurat ensures that favorable planets occupy strong positions, giving the activity the best possible cosmic foundation for success, stability, and prosperity.
How is a Muhurat calculated?
Muhurat calculation begins with computing the full Panchang for each day of the month at the selected location. Each day is then scored against event-specific rules from classical texts: favorable and unfavorable tithis, nakshatras, yogas, and karanas are identified. Days with universally inauspicious combinations (Rikta Tithi, Vishti Karana, Vyatipata Yoga) are flagged, while days with positive combinations receive higher scores. The result is a month-long calendar with every day rated from Excellent to Very Inauspicious.
Does Muhurat depend on the city or location?
Yes, significantly. Muhurat calculations depend on geographic location because sunrise and sunset times vary by city. Since the Panchang elements (Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana) are calculated based on the exact Sun and Moon positions at a specific location and time, the same date may have different tithi or nakshatra transitions in different cities. Always select your city when checking muhurat to get accurate results.
What is the difference between general and personalized Muhurat?
General muhurat considers universal Panchang factors that apply to everyone — favorable tithis, nakshatras, yogas, and absence of inauspicious combinations. Personalized muhurat goes further by also analyzing your individual birth chart (Kundli), current Vimshottari Dasha period, and ongoing planetary transits to find dates that are favorable specifically for you. ShreeKundli offers personalized muhurat when you create your free Kundli.
Can I trust online Muhurat calculations?
The accuracy of online muhurat depends entirely on the calculation engine behind it. ShreeKundli uses the Swiss Ephemeris — the same astronomical library used by professional astrologers worldwide — for precise planetary positions. The Panchang elements are computed from actual astronomical data, not from pre-tabulated calendars. However, for very important life events like marriage, consulting an experienced Jyotishi who can consider additional factors beyond the Panchang is always recommended.
