Preparation

Mantras

Keshanta Mantra (similar to Chudakarana)

ॐ येनावपत्सविता क्षुरेण सोमस्य राज्ञो वरुणस्य विद्वान् । तेन ब्राह्मणा वपतेदं भद्रं मा स्म वीरं परि पातयात्तम् ॥

Om yenāvapatsavitā kṣureṇa somasya rājño varuṇasya vidvān | Tena brāhmaṇā vapatedaṃ bhadraṃ mā sma vīraṃ pari pātayāttam ||

With which razor Savita, the knowing one, shaved King Soma and Varuna, with that let the Brahmin shave this auspicious (face). May you not harm the hero.

Razor Blessing

ॐ स्वस्त्यग्नेः पुनः पाहि स्वस्ति सूर्यस्य रश्मिभिः । स्वस्ति वातस्य वातैः स्वस्ति नो अधि ब्रूहि ॥

Om svastyagneḥ punaḥ pāhi svasti sūryasya raśmibhiḥ | Svasti vātasya vātaiḥ svasti no adhi brūhi ||

Protect again with Agni's blessings, with the rays of the Sun. With the winds of Vayu, speak blessings upon us.

Godana Mantra

ॐ गावो भगो गाव इन्द्रो म इच्छात् गावः सोमस्य प्रथमस्य भागः । इमा या गावः स जनास इन्द्र इच्छामि हृदा मनसा चिदिन्द्रम् ॥

Om gāvo bhago gāva indro ma icchāt gāvaḥ somasya prathamasya bhāgaḥ | Imā yā gāvaḥ sa janāsa indra icchāmi hṛdā manasā cidindram ||

Cows are fortune, may Indra desire cows for me. Cows are the first share of Soma. These cows, O Indra, I desire with heart and mind.

Keshanta as a separate ceremony is rarely performed today. Its elements are typically absorbed into Samavartana or performed informally.
