12 Rashis — Zodiac Signs in Vedic Astrology
The twelve Rashis are the cornerstone of Vedic astrology. Each Rashi spans 30° of the ecliptic, governed by a ruling planet (Graha), and contains two to three Nakshatras. Your Lagna Rashi (Ascendant) shapes your personality and physical constitution, while your Chandra Rashi (Moon sign) reveals your emotional nature and mind.
Together with the 12 Bhavas (houses), the Rashis form the structural framework through which planetary energies manifest in a birth chart (Kundli). Understanding each Rashi's element, quality, and lordship is essential for reading Yogas and compatibility analysis.

Three Qualities of Rashis
Every Rashi is classified as Cardinal, Fixed, or Dual — determining how its energy initiates, sustains, or adapts
Cardinal चर
Chara — Movable
Cardinal signs initiate action and change. They are the pioneers and leaders of the zodiac, bringing new energy at the start of each season. Natives with strong Cardinal influence are self-starters who prefer to lead rather than follow.
Fixed स्थिर
Sthira — Stable
Fixed signs sustain and preserve. They represent determination, persistence, and resistance to change. Natives with strong Fixed influence are loyal, focused, and unwavering once they commit to a path — though they can also be stubborn.
Dual द्विस्वभाव
Dvisvabhava — Mutable
Dual signs adapt and transform. They bridge two seasons and carry the qualities of both Cardinal and Fixed signs. Natives with strong Dual influence are versatile, flexible thinkers who can see multiple perspectives simultaneously.
Planetary Lordships
Seven Grahas rule the 12 Rashis — Sun and Moon rule one each, while Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn each rule two
Understanding Rashis in Vedic Astrology
The 12 Rashis (zodiac signs) form the foundational framework of Vedic astrology (Jyotish Shastra). Unlike Western astrology's tropical zodiac, Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac — anchored to the fixed stars using Lahiri Ayanamsa. This means your Vedic Rashi may differ from your Western sign by approximately one sign. Each Rashi spans exactly 30° of the 360° ecliptic and is governed by a ruling Graha (planet). The lord's placement, strength (via Shadbala), and aspects directly shape how that Rashi's themes manifest in your birth chart.
Every Rashi contains approximately 2.25 Nakshatras (lunar mansions), creating a dual-layer system of solar and lunar divisions. While the Rashi determines the broad character of a sign — its element, quality, and ruling planet — the Nakshatras within it add nuance through their deities, symbols, and Vimshottari Dasha lordships. Planets gain or lose strength depending on the Rashi they occupy: a planet in its own sign is strong, in its exaltation sign it is at peak power, and in its debilitation sign it is weakened. These dignities are central to evaluating Yogas and predicting life outcomes.
In chart analysis, the Rashis are mapped onto the 12 Bhavas (houses) starting from the Ascendant (Lagna). The sign on the cusp of each house colors the themes of that house. For example, if Taurus rises as the Ascendant, Venus becomes the Lagna Lord and the personality reflects Taurean qualities of stability and refinement. Rashi-based analysis is also essential in Kundli matching (compatibility), where the Moon's Rashi determines the starting point for Ashtakoot Guna analysis. Divisional charts (Vargas) like Navamsha (D-9) further refine Rashi analysis by revealing the subtle expression of planetary energies in specific life areas.
