Mythology & Stories
Budha (Mercury) was born from the controversial union of Chandra (Moon) with Tara, the wife of Brihaspati (Jupiter). This scandalous birth caused the great Tarakamaya War among the gods. Despite his controversial origin, Budha became highly respected for his wisdom, founded the great Lunar Dynasty, and was given a place among the Navagrahas.
| Father | Chandra (Moon) |
| Mother | Tara |
The Birth of Budha - The Tarakamaya War
Chandra (the Moon god), intoxicated by his own beauty and charm after emerging radiant from the Samudra Manthan, became arrogant. He set his eyes on Tara, the beautiful and devoted wife of Brihaspati, the guru of the gods. Despite Tara's initial resistance and warnings about dharma, Chandra used his mesmerizing influence to charm her away from Brihaspati's ashram. Brihaspati, upon discovering his wife's absence, demanded her return. Chandra refused. This led to the great Tarakamaya War—one of the major celestial conflicts. The Asuras, led by Shukra (Venus) who was pleased to oppose his rival Brihaspati, sided with Chandra. The Devas, loyal to their guru Brihaspati, opposed Chandra. Even Shiva initially sided with Chandra but withdrew. The war threatened to destroy creation. Finally, Lord Brahma intervened forcefully and commanded Chandra to return Tara. Chandra complied, but Tara returned pregnant. When she gave birth to a son of extraordinary beauty and intelligence, both Chandra and Brihaspati claimed him. Under pressure from Brahma, Tara admitted the father was Chandra. The boy was named Budha. Brihaspati, though initially angry, later accepted the situation through dharmic understanding.

Why Mercury and Moon Have a Complex Relationship
In Vedic astrology, a unique situation exists: Chandra (Moon) considers Budha (Mercury) neutral, while Budha considers Chandra an enemy. This reflects the mythology—though Chandra is Budha's father, the circumstances of Budha's birth brought shame and conflict. Budha, being highly intelligent and ethical, was disturbed by his illegitimate birth and the dishonor his father brought upon his mother Tara and stepfather Brihaspati. Some say Budha resented being born from a union that violated dharma. This psychological distance between father and son is reflected astrologically—Mercury and Moon's conjunction can create emotional-intellectual conflicts, and their relationship in a chart requires careful interpretation. It shows that even divine relationships have complexities.

Budha and Ila - The Unique Marriage
Ila (also known as Sudyumna) was the child of Manu Vaivasvata, the progenitor of humanity. Due to a mistake in the yajna (sacrifice) performed for Manu's child, Ila was born as a daughter instead of the desired son. Later, Ila was transformed into a man named Sudyumna. However, while hunting, Sudyumna accidentally entered a sacred grove where Shiva and Parvati were in intimate seclusion. Parvati had decreed that any male entering that grove would become female. Thus Sudyumna became Ila again. Ila, now female, wandered the forest and encountered Budha, who was performing penance there. Struck by her beauty, Budha proposed marriage. Ila accepted and lived with Budha for a month. During this time, she conceived and later gave birth to Pururavas, who would become the founder of the Lunar Dynasty. Through various interventions, Ila was eventually granted the boon to be male (Sudyumna) for one month and female (Ila) for the next, alternating throughout life. This unique marriage of the gender-fluid Ila with Budha gave rise to the great Chandravamsha.

Pururavas and the Lunar Dynasty
Pururavas, born to Budha and Ila, became one of the most celebrated kings in Indian mythology. He was extraordinarily handsome—his beauty was said to rival that of Kamadeva (the god of love). Pururavas fell in love with Urvashi, the celestial apsara, and their love story became legendary. Their descendants formed the Chandravamsha (Lunar Dynasty), one of the two primary royal lineages of ancient India (the other being Suryavamsha—Solar Dynasty). From Pururavas descended Nahusha, Yayati, Puru, Bharata (after whom India is called Bharatavarsha), Kuru, Shantanu, Bhishma, Dhritarashtra, Pandu, and eventually the Pandavas and Kauravas of the Mahabharata. Thus, Budha (Mercury) is the patriarchal ancestor of some of the most significant dynasties and characters in Indian history and literature. This is why Mercury is associated with royalty, lineage, and ancestry in Vedic astrology.

Budha's Wisdom and Acceptance
Despite the controversial circumstances of his birth, Budha rose above the stigma through his extraordinary intelligence, wisdom, and ethical conduct. The gods, who had been divided during the Tarakamaya War, eventually recognized Budha's merit independent of his origin. He was given the status of a Graha (planet) and assigned the role of governing intellect, communication, and commerce. Vishnu became his presiding deity, acknowledging his discriminative wisdom. Budha's story teaches that one's birth circumstances do not determine one's worth—through intelligence, righteousness, and self-development, one can transcend any beginning. This is reflected in Mercury's astrological nature: adaptable, taking on the qualities of associates, and capable of rising above limitations through wit and wisdom.

Why Vishnu is Mercury's Deity
Among the Navagrahas, each planet has a presiding deity. Lord Vishnu is the presiding deity for Budha (Mercury). Several reasons are given for this association. First, Vishnu represents preservation and maintenance of the universe—Mercury similarly maintains the flow of commerce, communication, and intellectual exchange that sustains society. Second, Vishnu is known for his discriminative wisdom (Viveka)—he discerns between dharma and adharma, just as Mercury governs the discriminating intellect. Third, Vishnu's avatars demonstrate supreme intelligence and adaptability—qualities Mercury bestows. The Vishnu Sahasranama (1000 names of Vishnu) is therefore considered a powerful remedy for Mercury afflictions. Worshipping Vishnu, especially reciting his thousand names, strengthens Mercury and improves intelligence, communication, and business success.

Mercury's Dual Nature - Neither Male Nor Female
Mercury is classified as 'Napunsaka' (neither male nor female/neutral) in Vedic astrology. Several mythological explanations exist. One theory connects this to Budha's marriage to Ila, who was sometimes male and sometimes female—their union transcended conventional gender, and Budha accepted this, showing his adaptable nature. Another explanation points to Mercury's nature of taking on the characteristics of planets it associates with—it has no fixed gender identity of its own. This neutral quality makes Mercury versatile, able to function in any context, and comfortable with ambiguity. In practical astrology, this means Mercury gives results that heavily depend on its associations and house placement rather than any inherent fixed nature.
