Mythology & Legends

The most sacred Ekadashi when the doors of Vaikuntha (Vishnu's heaven) open for all devotees.

The Demon Muran

A powerful demon named Muran terrorized the gods. Vishnu fought him for a thousand years and retired to rest in a cave. A beautiful divine woman emerged from Vishnu, killed Muran, and Vishnu named her 'Ekadashi.' He granted that those who observe her day would reach Vaikuntha.

Vaikuntha Dwara

On this Ekadashi, the main gate of Vaikuntha (Vaikuntha Dwara) opens. Souls who depart on this day or those who observe the fast with devotion are granted direct entry to Vaikuntha.

King Ambarisha

King Ambarisha was a devoted observer of Ekadashi. Even when tested by Sage Durvasa's curse, his devotion protected him. He exemplifies the power of Ekadashi vrat.

Vaikuntha Ekadashi is considered the most important of all 24 Ekadashis. Observing this fast is said to equal the merit of observing all other Ekadashis combined. The gates of heaven literally open on this day.
