Mythology & Legends

The annual journey of Lord Jagannath with siblings to their aunt's temple (Gundicha Temple), commemorating Krishna's journey to Vrindavan.

Journey to Gundicha

Lord Jagannath travels to Gundicha Temple (his aunt's home/birthplace) once a year. He stays there for seven days before returning. This represents Krishna's journey from Mathura to Vrindavan to meet his devotees.

Origin of Jagannath Worship

King Indradyumna found the divine Daru (wood) floating in the sea. Vishwakarma (in disguise) carved the deities but disappeared when disturbed before completion. Hence the unique unfinished appearance of the idols.

Word 'Juggernaut'

The massive chariots of Rath Yatra gave English the word 'juggernaut', meaning an unstoppable force, due to the enormous scale of the procession.

Source: Historical records

Rath Yatra demonstrates that the Lord leaves his temple to bless all devotees equally, regardless of caste or status. Pulling the chariot rope is considered highly meritorious.
