Mythology & Legends

Ancient vrat observed by married women for the longevity and well-being of their husbands.

Queen Veeravati

Queen Veeravati observed a strict Karwa Chauth fast but couldn't bear the hunger. Her brothers, to relieve her suffering, created a fake moon. She broke her fast prematurely, and her husband died. Through her devotion and Yama's grace, she restored his life. Hence, the fast must be broken only after seeing the actual moon.

Karwa and the Crocodile

A woman named Karwa's husband was caught by a crocodile. She bound the crocodile with sacred thread and went to Yama, threatening to curse him. Yama released her husband, impressed by her devotion. She is worshipped as Karwa Mata.

Savitri

The tradition connects to Savitri's devotion that saved her husband from Yama, establishing the power of a wife's prayers and fasting.
