Mythology & Legends
Celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu, born to Devaki and Vasudeva in Mathura prison.
Birth of Krishna
The tyrant king Kamsa imprisoned his sister Devaki and her husband Vasudeva because of a prophecy that their eighth son would kill him. On Krishna Ashtami, at midnight, during Rohini Nakshatra, Krishna was born. Miraculously, the prison doors opened and Vasudeva carried the newborn across the flooded Yamuna to Gokul, where he was raised by Yashoda and Nanda.

Divine Intervention
When Vasudeva carried Krishna, the serpent Sheshanaga protected them from rain, and the Yamuna parted to let them pass. He exchanged Krishna with Yashoda's daughter and returned to prison.

Krishna's birth marked the arrival of the Supreme Being in human form to restore dharma, destroy evil, and teach the eternal wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita.
