Mythology & Legends

Celebrates Parvati's devotion and penance to obtain Lord Shiva as her husband.

Parvati's Penance

Parvati was determined to marry only Lord Shiva. When her father Himalaya arranged her marriage to Lord Vishnu, her friend (sakhi) took her away (harit aalika) to a forest. There, Parvati performed severe penance. On Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya, Shiva appeared and accepted her as his consort. The word 'Hartalika' means 'one who was taken away by a friend'.
