Mythology & Legends

Celebrates the descent of the holy river Ganga from heaven to earth through the efforts of King Bhagirath.

Descent of Ganga

King Sagara's 60,000 sons were burnt to ashes by Sage Kapila's gaze. Only Ganga's waters could liberate their souls. After generations of penance, King Bhagirath pleased Brahma and Ganga agreed to descend. However, her force would destroy the earth. Shiva caught her in his matted locks, releasing her gently. Ganga descended on Jyeshtha Shukla Dashami.
