Mythology & Legends

Celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha to Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva.

Birth of Ganesha

Goddess Parvati created Ganesha from sandalwood paste and turmeric to guard her while bathing. When Shiva returned, Ganesha blocked him, not knowing who he was. Shiva beheaded him in anger. Upon learning the truth, Shiva replaced his head with that of an elephant and brought him back to life.

Moon's Curse

On this day, the Moon laughed at Ganesha's round belly after he fell from his mouse. Ganesha cursed that anyone who looks at the moon on Chaturthi would face false accusations. The curse was later modified.

First Among Gods

Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva declared that Ganesha would be worshipped first in all rituals, granting him the title Pratham Pujya (First to be Worshipped).
