Mythology & Legends
Celebrates Goddess Durga's victory over the buffalo demon Mahishasura after a nine-day battle.
Mahishasura Mardini
The demon Mahishasura, having obtained a boon that no male could kill him, conquered the heavens. The gods combined their powers to create Durga, who battled him for nine days and slayed him on the tenth day (Vijayadashami).

Akalbodhan - Rama's Worship
Lord Rama needed Durga's blessings before battling Ravana. Though autumn wasn't the traditional time for Durga Puja, he invoked her prematurely (Akalbodhan - untimely awakening). This established the autumn Durga Puja tradition.

Durga's Return Home
In Bengal, Durga Puja symbolizes the Goddess's annual visit to her parental home with her children (Lakshmi, Saraswati, Ganesha, Kartikeya). Her departure (Visarjan) represents an emotional farewell.
