Mythology & Legends

Celebrates the loving bond between siblings, originating from the legend of Yama's visit to his sister Yamuna.

Yama and Yamuna

Yama (God of Death) visited his twin sister Yamuna on this day after a long time. Yamuna welcomed him with tilak, aarti, and special food. Yama was so moved that he granted that any brother who receives tilak from his sister on this day will not fear death. He declared the day auspicious for siblings.

Boon of Immortality

When Yama left, Yamuna wept. Yama granted that whoever bathes in Yamuna on this day and honors their sister will have their life protected. This established the tradition of brothers visiting sisters.

Krishna and Subhadra

After killing the demon Narakasura, Lord Krishna visited his sister Subhadra. She welcomed him with aarti and tilak, establishing another tradition of this day.
