Mythology & Stories

Born to sage Jamadagni and Renuka; descended from Bhrigu rishi

Parashurama represents the balance between Brahminical knowledge and Kshatriya power. He demonstrates that dharma sometimes requires violent action, and that no varna is above correction.

Killing of Kartavirya Arjuna

King Kartavirya Arjuna (Sahasrarjuna), a powerful king with a thousand arms, forcibly took the divine cow Kamadhenu from Jamadagni's ashram. When Parashurama returned and learned of this, he single-handedly defeated and killed Kartavirya Arjuna. In revenge, Kartavirya's sons killed Jamadagni while Parashurama was away.

21 Times Earth Cleared

Enraged by his father's murder, Parashurama vowed to exterminate all Kshatriyas from the earth. He went around the world 21 times, killing all male Kshatriyas. He filled five lakes with their blood at Samantapanchaka (Kurukshetra). Finally, his grandfather Rishi Richika appeared and asked him to stop.

Encounter with Rama

When Rama broke Shiva's bow at Sita's swayamvara, Parashurama came to challenge him. Rama strung Parashurama's Vaishnava bow, and Parashurama realized Rama was Vishnu incarnate. He surrendered his power and returned to penance.

Teacher of Great Warriors

Parashurama taught martial arts to Bhishma, Drona, and even Karna (though Karna deceived him about his caste, resulting in a curse).
