Born to sage Atri and Anasuya as combined blessing of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva
Dattatreya represents the unity of all three aspects of the Divine. He is the Adi-guru (primordial teacher) who transcends all sectarian boundaries. His teaching of learning from nature shows that the guru is everywhere for those who are ready.
Birth from Trimurti
Sage Atri performed intense penance. Pleased, the Trimurti appeared. His wife Anasuya's purity was later tested when the three gods came as guests demanding she serve them naked. She transformed them into babies and nursed them. Pleased by her devotion, the three merged into one child - Dattatreya - combining their aspects.
