Mythology & Stories

Various origins - from Brahma, from rubbing of sticks (Arani), self-born

Agni is the witness to all sacred rites. Without Agni, no Vedic ritual is complete. He mediates between the human and divine realms.

Birth and Multiple Origins

Agni is said to have three births - in heaven (as the sun), in the air (as lightning), and on earth (as fire). He is born anew each time fire is kindled.

Agni and the Ashwins' Honey

Agni carries the offerings of humans to the gods and brings divine blessings back. He is the priest of the gods (Purohita) and the god of priests.

Hiding from the Gods

Tired of consuming everything in yajnas, Agni once hid in the waters. The gods searched everywhere. Finally, a frog revealed his hiding place. Agni cursed the frog to lose its tongue sensation.

Kartikeya's Birth

Agni carried Shiva's divine seed (which was too hot for anyone else) and eventually delivered it to Ganga, leading to Kartikeya's birth. This shows Agni's role as cosmic carrier.
