Once upon a time, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati were seated on Mount Kailash. One day, Goddess Parvati said to Lord Shiva - O Lord! My heart is very sad today. Let us visit Earth. Lord Shiva agreed and both came to Earth. While wandering, they reached a beautiful city. There was a magnificent Shiva temple there. Both entered the temple. While staying in the temple, they decided to play chausar (a dice game). Parvati Ji said - O Lord! There should be a judge for this game. At that time, the temple priest came there. Parvati Ji asked - O Brahmin! Tell us, who will win this game? The priest said without thinking - Lord Shiva will win. The game started and Parvati Ji won all three times. Goddess Parvati became angry because the priest had lied.

एक समय की बात है, भगवान शिव और माता पार्वती कैलाश पर्वत पर विराजमान थे। एक दिन माता पार्वती ने भगवान शिव से कहा - हे नाथ! आज मन बहुत उदास है। आइए, हम पृथ्वी पर भ्रमण करें। भगवान शिव मान गए और दोनों पृथ्वी पर आ गए। घूमते-घूमते वे एक सुंदर नगरी में पहुंचे। वहां एक भव्य शिव मंदिर था। दोनों ने मंदिर में प्रवेश किया। मंदिर में रहते हुए उन्होंने चौसर (पासे का खेल) खेलने का निश्चय किया। पार्वती जी ने कहा - हे प्रभु! इस खेल में कोई निर्णायक होना चाहिए। उस समय मंदिर का पुजारी वहां आया। पार्वती जी ने पूछा - हे ब्राह्मण! बताओ, इस खेल में कौन जीतेगा? पुजारी ने बिना सोचे-समझे कहा - भगवान शिव जीतेंगे। खेल शुरू हुआ और तीनों बार पार्वती जी जीत गईं। माता पार्वती क्रोधित हो गईं क्योंकि पुजारी ने झूठ बोला था।

Goddess Parvati cursed the priest - You have lied, therefore you will become a leper. The priest became very sad. Leprosy sores appeared on his body. Lord Shiva saw that the priest was very distressed. After some time, some celestial nymphs (Apsaras) came to that temple. They saw the priest's condition and asked - O Brahmin! How did you get into this state? The priest narrated the entire incident. The Apsaras said - O Brahmin! Observe the fast of sixteen Mondays. Lord Shiva will be pleased and your leprosy will be cured. The priest asked - How is this vrat performed? The Apsaras explained - Fast for sixteen Mondays. Offer water, milk, and bilva leaves on the Shivling. Eat in the evening. Perform Udyapan on the seventeenth Monday. The priest performed the vrat according to the prescribed method. When sixteen Mondays were completed, Lord Shiva was pleased and his leprosy was cured. He became more handsome and healthy than before.

माता पार्वती ने पुजारी को श्राप दिया - तुमने झूठ बोला है, इसलिए तुम कोढ़ी हो जाओगे। पुजारी बहुत दुखी हुआ। उसके शरीर पर कोढ़ के घाव निकल आए। भगवान शिव ने देखा कि पुजारी बहुत दुखी है। कुछ समय बाद कुछ अप्सराएं उस मंदिर में आईं। उन्होंने पुजारी की दशा देखी और पूछा - हे ब्राह्मण! तुम्हारी यह दशा कैसे हुई? पुजारी ने सारी घटना बताई। अप्सराओं ने कहा - हे ब्राह्मण! तुम सोलह सोमवार का व्रत करो। भगवान शिव प्रसन्न होंगे और तुम्हारा कोढ़ ठीक हो जाएगा। पुजारी ने पूछा - यह व्रत कैसे किया जाता है? अप्सराओं ने बताया - सोलह सोमवार व्रत रखो। शिवलिंग पर जल, दूध और बेलपत्र चढ़ाओ। शाम को भोजन करो। सत्रहवें सोमवार को उद्यापन करो। पुजारी ने विधिपूर्वक व्रत किया। सोलह सोमवार पूरे होने पर भगवान शिव प्रसन्न हुए और उसका कोढ़ ठीक हो गया। वह पहले से भी अधिक सुंदर और स्वस्थ हो गया।

Hearing about the priest's vrat, a merchant's son came to him. He said - O Priest! I want to get married but I cannot find any suitable girl. What should I do? The priest said - You should observe the fast of sixteen Mondays. Lord Shiva will surely provide you with a good wife. The merchant's son performed the vrat with devotion. When sixteen Mondays were completed, Lord Shiva was pleased. One day, the merchant's son went to a city. The king of that city had a beautiful daughter. The king had announced that whoever the elephant garlands with its trunk, the princess would marry him. All the princes came. The elephant did not go to anyone. Finally, the merchant's son was also standing there. The elephant picked up the garland and put it around his neck. The king married his daughter to the merchant's son. Both lived happily.

पुजारी के व्रत की बात सुनकर एक व्यापारी का पुत्र उसके पास आया। उसने कहा - हे पुजारी जी! मैं विवाह करना चाहता हूं परंतु कोई कन्या मिल नहीं रही। क्या करूं? पुजारी ने कहा - तुम सोलह सोमवार का व्रत करो। भगवान शिव तुम्हें अवश्य अच्छी पत्नी प्रदान करेंगे। व्यापारी के पुत्र ने श्रद्धापूर्वक व्रत किया। सोलह सोमवार पूरे होने पर भगवान शिव प्रसन्न हुए। एक दिन वह व्यापारी का पुत्र एक नगर में गया। वहां के राजा की एक सुंदर पुत्री थी। राजा ने घोषणा की थी कि जो हाथी अपनी सूंड से वरमाला उठाकर जिसे पहनाएगा, राजकुमारी का विवाह उसी से होगा। सभी राजकुमार आए। हाथी किसी के पास नहीं गया। अंत में वह व्यापारी का पुत्र भी वहां खड़ा था। हाथी ने वरमाला उठाई और उसके गले में डाल दी। राजा ने अपनी पुत्री का विवाह व्यापारी के पुत्र से कर दिया। दोनों सुखी रहने लगे।

After the marriage, the princess asked her husband - You are from an ordinary family, then why did the elephant choose you? The merchant's son said - I had observed the fast of sixteen Mondays. By the grace of Lord Shiva, I got a beautiful wife like you. The princess said - I also want to observe this vrat. She also performed the sixteen Monday vrat according to the proper method and wished for a son. By the grace of Lord Shiva, she was blessed with a beautiful son. When the son grew up, the princess told him about the sixteen Monday vrat. The son also performed the vrat and wished for a kingdom. When the vrat was completed, one day he went to a city. The king of that city had no children and was looking for an heir. The king saw the young man and made him his successor.

विवाह के बाद राजकुमारी ने अपने पति से पूछा - आप साधारण परिवार से हैं, फिर भी हाथी ने आपको ही क्यों चुना? व्यापारी के पुत्र ने कहा - मैंने सोलह सोमवार का व्रत किया था। भगवान शिव की कृपा से मुझे आप जैसी सुंदर पत्नी मिली। राजकुमारी ने कहा - मैं भी यह व्रत करना चाहती हूं। उसने भी विधिपूर्वक सोलह सोमवार का व्रत किया और मांगा कि उसे पुत्र की प्राप्ति हो। भगवान शिव की कृपा से उसे एक सुंदर पुत्र प्राप्त हुआ। जब पुत्र बड़ा हुआ, तो राजकुमारी ने उसे भी सोलह सोमवार व्रत के बारे में बताया। पुत्र ने भी व्रत किया और राज्य की प्राप्ति की कामना की। व्रत पूर्ण होने पर एक दिन वह किसी नगर में गया। वहां के राजा की कोई संतान नहीं थी और वे उत्तराधिकारी खोज रहे थे। राजा ने उस युवक को देखा और उसे अपना उत्तराधिकारी बना दिया।

After becoming the new king, the young man set out for his marriage. His marriage was arranged with a beautiful princess. When he sat in the wedding pavilion, there was a divine voice from the sky - O King! You performed the sixteen Monday vrat, but did not do the Udyapan. Until you complete the Udyapan, your marriage will not be complete. Hearing this, everyone became worried. The young man said - I will perform the Udyapan right now. He performed Shiva puja according to the proper method, fed Brahmins, gave dakshina, and fed unmarried girls. As soon as the Udyapan was completed, Lord Shiva was pleased and the marriage was solemnized. The young man returned to his kingdom with his wife and ruled happily. Whoever observes the sixteen Monday vrat with devotion and performs the Udyapan properly, all their wishes are fulfilled. Lord Shiva always keeps his grace on them. ॥ Thus ends the Solah Somvar Vrat Katha ॥ ॥ Om Namah Shivaya ॥

नया राजा बनने के बाद युवक विवाह के लिए जाने लगा। उसका विवाह एक सुंदर राजकुमारी से तय हुआ। विवाह के मंडप में जब वह बैठा, तब एक आकाशवाणी हुई - हे राजन! तुमने सोलह सोमवार व्रत तो किया, परंतु उद्यापन नहीं किया। जब तक तुम उद्यापन नहीं करोगे, तब तक तुम्हारा विवाह पूर्ण नहीं होगा। यह सुनकर सभी चिंतित हो गए। युवक ने कहा - मैं अभी उद्यापन करूंगा। उसने विधिपूर्वक शिव पूजा की, ब्राह्मणों को भोजन कराया, दक्षिणा दी और कुंवारी कन्याओं को भोजन कराया। उद्यापन पूर्ण होते ही भगवान शिव प्रसन्न हुए और विवाह संपन्न हुआ। युवक अपनी पत्नी के साथ अपने राज्य लौटा और सुखपूर्वक राज्य करने लगा। जो कोई श्रद्धापूर्वक सोलह सोमवार व्रत करता है और विधिपूर्वक उद्यापन करता है, उसकी सभी मनोकामनाएं पूर्ण होती हैं। भगवान शिव उस पर सदा कृपा बनाए रखते हैं। ॥ इति श्री सोलह सोमवार व्रत कथा संपूर्णम् ॥ ॥ ॐ नमः शिवाय ॥
