Shukravar Vrat Katha

शुक्रवार व्रत कथा

Vrat Katha Goddess Santoshi Mata / Goddess Lakshmi / Goddess Durga

About

Shukravar Vrat (Friday fasting) is a popular Hindu fast observed in honor of various forms of the Divine Mother (Devi) - primarily Goddess Santoshi Mata, Goddess Lakshmi, and Goddess Durga. Friday is associated with the planet Venus (Shukra), which represents beauty, love, prosperity, and marital bliss. This fast is especially popular among women who observe it for 16 consecutive Fridays for the fulfillment of their wishes, marital happiness, and prosperity. The vrat is known for being easy to observe and highly effective in granting boons. It is believed that Goddess Santoshi Mata is easily pleased and quickly fulfills the wishes of her devotees.

Vrat Vidhi (Observance Method)

1 Sankalp (Resolve)

Begin the vrat by taking a sankalp (resolve) to observe the Shukravar Vrat for 16 consecutive Fridays. Wake up early in the morning, bathe, and wear clean white or light-colored clothes. White is the sacred color of Goddess Lakshmi and represents purity and peace.

2 Puja Sthapana (Setting up the Altar)

Clean the puja area and spread a white cloth. Place the idol or image of Goddess Lakshmi (or Santoshi Mata) on the altar. Place a kalash (sacred pot) filled with water, mango leaves, and a coconut on top. Light a ghee lamp (diya) and incense sticks. Arrange white flowers, especially lotus and jasmine, for offering.

3 Lakshmi Puja

Invoke Goddess Lakshmi with the mantra "Om Shri Mahalakshmyai Namah". Perform Shodashopachara puja (16-step worship). Offer sindoor (vermilion), haldi (turmeric), kumkum, white sandalwood paste, and white flowers. Offer white sweets as naivedya (food offering) - such as kheer (rice pudding), mishri (rock sugar), white sesame laddoo, or coconut barfi. Recite Lakshmi Chalisa or Sri Suktam.

4 Katha Shravan (Listening to the Story)

After the puja, sit with family members and listen to or recite the Shukravar Vrat Katha with full devotion. The katha narrates the glory of Goddess Lakshmi and the miraculous benefits received by devoted worshippers. Maintain a calm and focused mind during the recitation.

5 Fasting Rules

Observe a fast throughout the day. You may consume fruits, milk, and sabudana (sago) during the fast. Avoid salt, grains, and sour foods. Some devotees observe a nirjala (waterless) fast until evening. Break the fast in the evening after the puja by consuming the prasad. The food should be sattvic (pure) and preferably white or sweet in nature.

6 Aarti and Prasad Distribution

Conclude the puja with Lakshmi Aarti. Offer white sweets and kheer as prasad. Distribute the prasad to all family members and neighbors. It is considered highly auspicious to donate white items - such as white clothes, sugar, rice, milk, or white sweets - to the needy on this day. On the 16th and final Friday, perform Udyapan (concluding ceremony) with a special puja and feed Brahmins or the needy.
