Shukravar (Friday) Santoshi Mata Vrat Katha

In a village lived an old woman with seven sons and seven daughters-in-law. The youngest daughter-in-law was simple-hearted and devoted to God. All her elder sisters-in-law used to trouble her greatly. One day, the youngest went to the forest to collect firewood. There she saw some women performing puja. She asked, 'Whom are you worshipping?' The women replied, 'We worship Santoshi Mata. Whoever observes the fast for 16 Fridays has all wishes fulfilled.'

एक गांव में एक बुढ़िया रहती थी। उसके सात बेटे और सात बहुएं थीं। सबसे छोटी बहू बहुत सीधी-सादी और भगवान की भक्त थी। सभी जेठानियां उसे बहुत सताती थीं। एक दिन छोटी बहू जंगल में लकड़ी लेने गई। वहां उसने कुछ स्त्रियों को पूजा करते देखा। उसने पूछा, 'आप किसकी पूजा कर रही हैं?' स्त्रियों ने कहा, 'हम संतोषी माता की पूजा कर रही हैं। जो भी 16 शुक्रवार व्रत करता है, उसकी सभी मनोकामनाएं पूर्ण होती हैं।'

The youngest daughter-in-law started the vrat from the very next Friday. She would make gur-chana prasad, worship the Mother, and listen to the katha. Within a few Fridays, her husband got a good job in a faraway land. They became wealthy. But the husband hadn't come home for a long time. She prayed to the Mother, 'O Mother, please send my husband home safely.' Santoshi Mata appeared in her husband's dream and told him to go home.

छोटी बहू ने अगले ही शुक्रवार से व्रत शुरू कर दिया। वह गुड़-चना का प्रसाद बनाती, माता की पूजा करती और कथा सुनती। कुछ ही शुक्रवारों में उसके पति को परदेश में अच्छी नौकरी मिल गई। वे धनवान हो गए। परंतु पति बहुत दिनों से घर नहीं आया था। छोटी बहू ने माता से प्रार्थना की, 'हे माता, मेरे पति को सकुशल घर भेज दो।' संतोषी माता ने उसके पति को स्वप्न में दर्शन दिए और घर जाने को कहा।

When the husband returned, he brought much wealth. The youngest decided to perform the Udyapan ceremony. She fed eight young Brahmachari boys. The jealous sisters-in-law mixed sour food in the meal. The boys, upon tasting the sour food, left the meal and went away. Santoshi Mata became very angry. The king falsely accused her husband of theft and imprisoned him. Poverty returned to the house.

पति घर आया तो बहुत धन लाया। छोटी बहू ने उद्यापन करने का निश्चय किया। उसने आठ ब्रह्मचारी बालकों को भोजन कराया। जेठानियों को बहुत जलन हुई। उन्होंने बालकों के भोजन में खटाई डाल दी। बालकों ने खट्टा खाते ही भोजन छोड़ दिया और चले गए। संतोषी माता को बहुत क्रोध आया। उनके पति पर राजा ने चोरी का आरोप लगाकर जेल में डाल दिया। घर में फिर से दरिद्रता आ गई।

The youngest understood that the sisters-in-law had mixed sour food. She sought forgiveness from the Mother and resolved to observe 16 Fridays again. After completing the vrat, she performed Udyapan again. This time she prepared everything herself and didn't let anyone touch the food. Santoshi Mata was pleased. Her husband was released from prison, all wealth was restored, and they lived happily ever after. Whoever observes this fast with devotion has all wishes fulfilled. ॥ Thus ends the Santoshi Mata Vrat Katha ॥

छोटी बहू समझ गई कि जेठानियों ने खटाई डाली है। उसने माता से क्षमा मांगी और फिर से 16 शुक्रवार व्रत करने का संकल्प लिया। व्रत पूर्ण होने पर उसने फिर उद्यापन किया। इस बार उसने स्वयं सब कुछ बनाया और किसी को भोजन में हाथ नहीं लगाने दिया। संतोषी माता प्रसन्न हुईं। उसके पति को जेल से छुटकारा मिला, सारा धन वापस मिला, और वे सुखपूर्वक जीवन व्यतीत करने लगे। जो भी श्रद्धा से यह व्रत करता है, उसकी सभी मनोकामनाएं पूर्ण होती हैं। ॥ इति श्री संतोषी माता व्रत कथा समाप्त ॥
