Vrat Vidhi (Observance Method)

Wake up early, bathe, and wear black or dark blue clothes. Offer mustard oil, black sesame, black cloth, and iron items to Shani idol or under a Peepal tree. Light a mustard oil lamp. Fast until sunset or eat only once after sunset. Recite Shani Stotra and listen to the katha. Donate to the poor, especially items associated with Saturn.

प्रातः उठकर स्नान करें, काले या गहरे नीले वस्त्र धारण करें। शनि प्रतिमा या पीपल के वृक्ष के नीचे सरसों का तेल, काले तिल, काला वस्त्र और लोहे की वस्तुएं अर्पित करें। सरसों के तेल का दीपक जलाएं। सूर्यास्त तक उपवास करें या सूर्यास्त के बाद एक बार भोजन करें। शनि स्तोत्र का पाठ करें और कथा सुनें। गरीबों को दान करें।

The Debate Among Planets

Once all nine planets gathered and debated who was the greatest. Sun said he was greatest because he gives light. Moon claimed he gives coolness. All planets stated their greatness. When Saturn's turn came, he said - whoever comes under my influence, I give them suffering. I am the god of justice.

एक समय सभी नवग्रह एकत्र हुए और इस बात पर वाद-विवाद होने लगा कि कौन सबसे महान है। सूर्य ने कहा मैं सबसे महान हूं क्योंकि मैं प्रकाश देता हूं। चंद्रमा ने कहा मैं शीतलता देता हूं। सभी ग्रहों ने अपनी महानता बताई। जब शनि की बारी आई तो उन्होंने कहा - जो मेरी दशा में आता है, उसे मैं कष्ट देता हूं। मैं न्याय का देवता हूं।

King Vikramaditya's Pride

King Vikramaditya was an extremely powerful and justice-loving king. When he learned of the planets' debate, he decided that Sun was the greatest. Shani Dev found this unacceptable. He said - O King, when my gaze falls upon you, you will know my power. Vikramaditya said - I am ready.

राजा विक्रमादित्य अत्यंत शक्तिशाली और न्यायप्रिय राजा थे। जब उन्हें ग्रहों के वाद-विवाद का पता चला, उन्होंने निर्णय लिया कि सूर्य सबसे महान है। शनिदेव को यह अस्वीकार्य लगा। उन्होंने कहा - राजन, जब मेरी दृष्टि तुम पर पड़ेगी, तब तुम जानोगे कि मेरी शक्ति क्या है। विक्रमादित्य ने कहा - मैं तैयार हूं।

Vikramaditya's Seven and a Half Years of Suffering

When Saturn's seven-and-a-half-year period came upon Vikramaditya, his kingdom was lost. He became a beggar wandering about. A merchant employed him as a servant. One day a necklace was stolen from the merchant's shop and Vikramaditya was accused. By royal order, his hands and feet were cut off. He began working at an oil-presser's place.

जब शनि की साढ़े साती विक्रमादित्य पर आई, उनका राज्य छिन गया। वे भिखारी बनकर भटकने लगे। एक व्यापारी ने उन्हें नौकर रखा। एक दिन व्यापारी की दुकान से हार चोरी हो गया और विक्रमादित्य पर आरोप लगा। राजा के आदेश पर उनके हाथ-पैर काट दिए गए। वे एक तेली के यहां काम करने लगे।

The Princess and the Miracle

One night Vikramaditya lit a lamp and sang Raag Megh. His melodious singing brought clouds and rain. The princess witnessed this and expressed desire to marry him. They were married. On the wedding night, Vikramaditya's hands and feet returned. The princess asked how this miracle happened. Vikramaditya said this is Shani Dev's grace.

एक रात विक्रमादित्य ने दीपक जलाकर राग मेघ गाया। उनके सुरीले गायन से बादल बरसने लगे और वर्षा हुई। राजकुमारी ने यह देखा और उनसे विवाह करने की इच्छा व्यक्त की। विवाह हो गया। विवाह की रात विक्रमादित्य के हाथ-पैर वापस आ गए। राजकुमारी ने पूछा यह चमत्कार कैसे हुआ? विक्रमादित्य ने बताया यह शनिदेव की कृपा है।

Vikramaditya's Realization and Devotion

When Saturn's seven-and-a-half-year period ended, Vikramaditya regained his kingdom. He understood Shani Dev's glory and began worshipping him. He declared that Shani is the most justice-loving deity. One who observes Saturday fast and listens to this story receives Shani Dev's grace and freedom from sufferings.

शनि की साढ़े साती समाप्त होने पर विक्रमादित्य को उनका राज्य वापस मिल गया। उन्होंने शनिदेव की महिमा को समझा और उनकी पूजा आरंभ की। उन्होंने घोषणा की कि शनि सबसे न्यायप्रिय देवता हैं। जो शनिवार का व्रत करता है और इस कथा को सुनता है, उसे शनि देव की कृपा प्राप्त होती है और कष्टों से मुक्ति मिलती है।
