Once upon a time, in Naimisharanya, the sages led by Shaunaka asked Suta Ji - O Suta Ji! Please tell us about a vrat that can free humans from worldly sorrows and lead them to supreme happiness.
Suta Ji said - O sages! Once, Narada Ji was wandering on Earth and became sad seeing the sufferings of humans. He went to Lord Vishnu in Brahmaloka and asked - O Lord! How can humans be freed from sorrows?
Lord Vishnu said - O Narada! Humans can be freed from all sorrows by performing the Satyanarayan Vrat. By doing this vrat, one attains wealth, children, happiness, and prosperity.
Narada Ji asked - O Lord! How should this vrat be performed?
The Lord said - Perform this vrat on Purnima, Sankranti, or any auspicious day. Bathe in the evening and wear clean clothes. Install my idol and worship with Shodashopachara (16 types of offerings). Listen to the katha with Brahmins and noble people and partake of prasad.
Narada Ji spread this vrat on Earth. Once in the city of Kashi, there lived an extremely poor Brahmin. He survived by begging for alms. One day, Lord Vishnu came to him disguised as an old Brahmin.
The Lord asked - O Brahmin! Why are you so sad?
The Brahmin said - I am extremely poor. Please suggest a remedy.
The Lord said - Perform the Satyanarayan Vrat. All your wishes will be fulfilled.
The Brahmin performed the vrat with devotion. From that very day, he started receiving wealth in alms. He became prosperous and lived a happy life. Whenever he performed the vrat, his wealth increased.

एक समय की बात है, नैमिषारण्य में शौनकादि ऋषि सूत जी से कहने लगे - हे सूत जी! हमें कोई ऐसा व्रत बताइए जिससे मनुष्य सांसारिक दुखों से मुक्त होकर परम सुख को प्राप्त करे।
सूत जी बोले - हे मुनियों! एक समय नारद जी भूलोक में भ्रमण करते हुए मनुष्यों के दुख देखकर दुखी हुए। वे ब्रह्मलोक में भगवान विष्णु के पास गए और पूछा - हे प्रभु! मनुष्य कैसे दुखों से मुक्त हो सकते हैं?
भगवान विष्णु बोले - हे नारद! मनुष्य सत्यनारायण व्रत करके सभी दुखों से मुक्त हो सकता है। यह व्रत करने से धन, संतान, सुख-समृद्धि प्राप्त होती है।
नारद जी ने पूछा - हे प्रभु! यह व्रत कैसे करना चाहिए?
भगवान बोले - पूर्णिमा, संक्रांति या किसी भी शुभ दिन इस व्रत को करें। सायंकाल में स्नान करके शुद्ध वस्त्र पहनें। मेरी मूर्ति स्थापित करके षोडशोपचार से पूजा करें। ब्राह्मणों और सज्जनों के साथ कथा सुनें और प्रसाद ग्रहण करें।
नारद जी ने यह व्रत पृथ्वी पर प्रचारित किया। एक बार काशी नगरी में एक अत्यंत निर्धन ब्राह्मण रहता था। वह भिक्षा मांगकर जीवन यापन करता था। एक दिन भगवान विष्णु वृद्ध ब्राह्मण के वेश में उसके पास आए।
भगवान बोले - हे विप्र! तुम इतने दुखी क्यों हो?
ब्राह्मण ने कहा - मैं अत्यंत निर्धन हूं। कृपया कोई उपाय बताइए।
भगवान बोले - तुम सत्यनारायण व्रत करो। इससे तुम्हारी सारी इच्छाएं पूर्ण होंगी।
ब्राह्मण ने श्रद्धापूर्वक व्रत किया। उसी दिन से उसे भिक्षा में धन मिलने लगा। वह धनवान हो गया और सुखी जीवन व्यतीत करने लगा। जब भी वह व्रत करता, उसका धन बढ़ता जाता।
