Santoshi Mata Vrat Katha

In ancient times, Lord Ganesha had two sons - Shubh and Labh. Once, on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, when their sisters came to tie rakhi on them, Shubh and Labh said to their father - O Father! We have no sister to tie rakhi on us. We also want a sister. Lord Ganesha looked at his two wives, Riddhi and Siddhi. From their wish and the prayers of Shubh-Labh, a divine light appeared, and from it, a beautiful daughter was born. This daughter was named 'Santoshi' because she was the one who grants satisfaction. Shubh and Labh got their sister and were very happy. Santoshi Mata grants contentment, happiness, and prosperity to her devotees. Whoever worships her with a true heart, all their wishes are fulfilled.

प्राचीन काल में भगवान गणेश के दो पुत्र थे - शुभ और लाभ। एक बार रक्षाबंधन के अवसर पर जब उनकी बहनें उन्हें राखी बांधने आईं, तो शुभ और लाभ ने अपने पिता से कहा - हे पिताजी! हमारी कोई बहन नहीं है जो हमें राखी बांधे। हमें भी एक बहन चाहिए। भगवान गणेश ने अपनी दोनों पत्नियों रिद्धि और सिद्धि की ओर देखा। उनकी इच्छा और शुभ-लाभ की प्रार्थना से एक दिव्य ज्योति प्रकट हुई और उससे एक सुंदर कन्या का जन्म हुआ। इस कन्या को 'संतोषी' नाम दिया गया क्योंकि वह संतोष प्रदान करने वाली थी। शुभ और लाभ को अपनी बहन मिल गई और वे बहुत प्रसन्न हुए। संतोषी माता अपने भक्तों को संतोष, सुख और समृद्धि प्रदान करती हैं। जो भी सच्चे मन से उनकी पूजा करता है, उसकी सभी मनोकामनाएं पूर्ण होती हैं।

In a village, there lived an old woman. She had seven sons and seven daughters-in-law. The youngest daughter-in-law was named Saraswati. She came from a very poor family. All the daughters-in-law used to trouble Saraswati. She had to do all the household chores and got only leftover food. Her husband was also poor and had gone to another country to work. One day, Saraswati went to the forest to collect wood. There she saw some women performing puja. She asked - Whom are you worshipping? The women said - We are worshipping Santoshi Mata. By doing this vrat, all sorrows are removed and wishes are fulfilled. Saraswati asked - How is this vrat done? The women explained - Fast for sixteen Fridays. Offer gur-chana as prasad. Do not eat anything sour. After completing the vrat, feed eight boys. Saraswati started the vrat from that very day.

एक गांव में एक बुढ़िया रहती थी। उसके सात बेटे और सात बहुएं थीं। सबसे छोटी बहू का नाम सरस्वती था। वह बहुत गरीब परिवार से थी। सभी बहुएं सरस्वती को बहुत सताती थीं। उसे घर के सारे काम करने पड़ते और बचा हुआ खाना मिलता। उसका पति भी गरीब था और दूसरे देश में काम करने गया था। एक दिन सरस्वती जंगल में लकड़ी लेने गई। वहां उसने कुछ महिलाओं को पूजा करते देखा। उसने पूछा - आप किसकी पूजा कर रही हैं? महिलाओं ने कहा - हम संतोषी माता की पूजा कर रही हैं। यह व्रत करने से सभी दुख दूर होते हैं और मनोकामनाएं पूर्ण होती हैं। सरस्वती ने पूछा - यह व्रत कैसे किया जाता है? महिलाओं ने बताया - सोलह शुक्रवार व्रत करो। गुड़-चना का प्रसाद चढ़ाओ। खट्टा न खाओ। व्रत पूरा होने पर आठ लड़कों को भोजन कराओ। सरस्वती ने उसी दिन से व्रत शुरू किया।

Saraswati fasted every Friday. She would beg to gather gur-chana for prasad and worship the Goddess. Santoshi Mata was pleased with her devotion. Gradually, Saraswati's troubles started reducing. Her husband got a good job abroad and started sending money. After some time, her husband returned home. He had become very wealthy. He brought beautiful clothes, jewelry for Saraswati, and items for the house. Now Saraswati's life had changed. She built her own house and started living happily. When sixteen Fridays were completed, Saraswati decided to perform the Udyapan (conclusion ceremony). She invited eight boys for a meal.

सरस्वती हर शुक्रवार को व्रत करती। वह भीख मांगकर गुड़-चना का प्रसाद जुटाती और माता की पूजा करती। संतोषी माता उसकी भक्ति से प्रसन्न हुईं। धीरे-धीरे सरस्वती के कष्ट कम होने लगे। उसके पति को विदेश में अच्छा काम मिला और वह धन भेजने लगा। कुछ समय बाद उसका पति घर लौटा। वह बहुत धनवान हो गया था। उसने सरस्वती के लिए सुंदर कपड़े, गहने और घर के लिए सामान लाया। अब सरस्वती का जीवन बदल गया। वह अपना अलग घर बनाकर सुखी रहने लगी। जब सोलह शुक्रवार पूरे हुए, तो सरस्वती ने उद्यापन करने का निश्चय किया। उसने आठ लड़कों को भोजन के लिए बुलाया।

When Saraswati was preparing for the Udyapan, her sisters-in-law became jealous. They thought - We will not let her Udyapan succeed. On the day of Udyapan, when the boys were eating, the sisters-in-law secretly mixed lemon juice in the food. The food became sour. The boys left the food and got up saying - This food is sour, we will not eat it. Santoshi Mata became angry because sour things are forbidden in her vrat. She punished Saraswati. That very night, the king's soldiers arrested Saraswati's husband mistaking him for a thief and put him in jail. Saraswati became sad again. She thought - What mistake did I make?

जब सरस्वती उद्यापन की तैयारी कर रही थी, तब उसकी जेठानियों को जलन हुई। उन्होंने सोचा - हम इसका उद्यापन सफल नहीं होने देंगी। उद्यापन के दिन जब लड़के भोजन कर रहे थे, तब जेठानियों ने चुपके से भोजन में नींबू का रस मिला दिया। भोजन खट्टा हो गया। लड़के भोजन छोड़कर उठ गए और कहा - यह भोजन खट्टा है, हम नहीं खाएंगे। संतोषी माता क्रोधित हो गईं क्योंकि उनके व्रत में खट्टा वर्जित है। उन्होंने सरस्वती को दंड दिया। उसी रात राजा के सैनिकों ने सरस्वती के पति को चोर समझकर पकड़ लिया और जेल में डाल दिया। सरस्वती फिर से दुखी हो गई। उसने सोचा - मैंने कौन सी गलती की?

Saraswati prayed to the Goddess - O Mother! If I have made any mistake knowingly or unknowingly, please forgive me. Tell me, what offense did I commit? Santoshi Mata appeared in her dream and said - Daughter! Your sisters-in-law had mixed something sour in the food. That is why your vrat was broken. Perform the Udyapan again, but this time be careful. Saraswati started the vrat again. This time she prepared all the food herself and did not let anyone interfere. When the Udyapan was completed, Santoshi Mata was pleased. At that very moment, the king learned the truth in a dream. He released Saraswati's husband and gave him a lot of wealth as a reward. Saraswati and her family started living happily. The sisters-in-law repented their mistake and also started observing Santoshi Mata's vrat. Whoever observes Santoshi Mata's vrat with devotion, all their wishes are fulfilled. सरस्वती ने माता से प्रार्थना की - हे माता! मैंने जाने-अनजाने कोई गलती की हो तो क्षमा करें। मुझे बताएं, मैंने क्या अपराध किया? संतोषी माता ने स्वप्न में दर्शन दिए और कहा - बेटी! तुम्हारी जेठानियों ने भोजन में खट्टा मिला दिया था। इसलिए तुम्हारा व्रत खंडित हो गया। तुम फिर से उद्यापन करो, परंतु इस बार सावधान रहना। सरस्वती ने फिर से व्रत शुरू किया। इस बार उसने स्वयं सारा भोजन बनाया और किसी को हस्तक्षेप नहीं करने दिया। जब उद्यापन पूर्ण हुआ, संतोषी माता प्रसन्न हुईं। उसी समय राजा को सपने में सच्चाई का पता चला। उसने सरस्वती के पति को रिहा कर दिया और उसे बहुत सा धन इनाम में दिया। सरस्वती और उसका परिवार सुखी रहने लगा। जेठानियों को अपनी गलती का पश्चाताप हुआ और उन्होंने भी संतोषी माता का व्रत करना शुरू किया। जो कोई श्रद्धापूर्वक संतोषी माता का व्रत करता है, उसकी सभी मनोकामनाएं पूर्ण होती हैं। माता अपने भक्तों की रक्षा करती हैं और उन्हें संतोष प्रदान करती हैं। ॥ इति श्री संतोषी माता व्रत कथा संपूर्णम् ॥ ॥ जय संतोषी माता की जय ॥
