Pradosh Vrat Katha

प्रदोष व्रत कथा

Vrat Katha Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati

About

Pradosh Vrat is a sacred Hindu fast observed in honor of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. It falls on the 13th day (Trayodashi) of both the waxing (Shukla Paksha) and waning (Krishna Paksha) lunar phases, occurring twice every month. The word 'Pradosh' refers to the twilight period - the time just after sunset when day transitions to night. This is considered the most auspicious time to worship Lord Shiva. The vrat is believed to remove sins, fulfill wishes, and bestow the blessings of Lord Shiva. Different days of the week on which Pradosh falls have special significance - Monday Pradosh (Som Pradosh) and Saturday Pradosh (Shani Pradosh) are considered most powerful.

Vrat Vidhi (Observance Method)

1 Preparation (Puja Samagri)

  • Clean the puja area and place a wooden chowki (platform). Spread a clean white or yellow cloth over it.
  • Install a Shivling or an idol of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati on the chowki. If unavailable, make a Shivling from clay or sand.
  • Arrange Bel Patra (wood apple leaves), Dhatura flowers, Aak flowers, white and blue flowers, and Shami leaves.
  • Keep raw milk, curd, honey, ghee, sugar (Panchamrit ingredients), Gangajal, sandalwood paste (chandan), and vibhuti (sacred ash) ready.
  • Arrange a copper or brass lota (vessel) for abhishek, a diya (lamp) with ghee or sesame oil, incense sticks, camphor, and fruits.
  • Keep a Rudraksha mala for chanting and a copy of the Pradosh Vrat Katha.

2 Fasting Rules (Upvaas Niyam)

  • Wake up early in the morning (Brahma Muhurta) and take a bath. Take a sankalp (vow) to observe the Pradosh Vrat.
  • Observe a strict fast throughout the day until Pradosh Kaal (twilight period). Do not consume any grains, pulses, or regular food.
  • Fruits, milk, and water are permitted during the day for those unable to observe a nirjala (waterless) fast.
  • Maintain purity of mind and body. Avoid anger, harsh speech, and negative thoughts throughout the day.
  • Spend the day in devotion - chanting 'Om Namah Shivaya', reading Shiva Purana, or meditating on Lord Shiva.
  • The fast is broken only after completing the Pradosh Kaal puja and partaking of the prasad.

3 Pradosh Kaal Puja Procedure

  • Pradosh Kaal begins approximately 1.5 hours before sunset and extends to 1 hour after sunset. This is the most sacred window for performing the puja.
  • Take a bath again before the puja. Wear clean, fresh clothes - preferably white or light-colored.
  • Light the ghee diya and incense sticks. Invoke Lord Ganesha first with the mantra 'Om Gan Ganapataye Namah' and offer modak or laddoo.
  • Then invoke Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati along with Nandi. Chant 'Om Namah Shivaya' 108 times using the Rudraksha mala.
  • Recite the Pradosh Vrat Katha with full devotion. If possible, have a family gathering to listen to the katha together.
  • Perform the Shiva Aarti - 'Om Jai Shiv Omkara'. Offer camphor and circle the aarti thali clockwise.
  • Conclude by offering Bel Patra on the Shivling while chanting 'Om Namah Shivaya'. Distribute prasad to all present.

4 Shiva Abhishek and Offerings

  • Begin the abhishek by pouring Gangajal over the Shivling while chanting 'Om Namah Shivaya'. This purifies and sanctifies the deity.
  • Perform Panchamrit Abhishek - pour raw milk, curd, honey, ghee, and sugar water over the Shivling one by one, each with the Shiva mantra.
  • Follow with a sugarcane juice or coconut water abhishek if available. Then wash the Shivling gently with clean water.
  • Apply sandalwood paste (chandan) and vibhuti (sacred ash) on the Shivling. Place Bel Patra leaves (sets of three) on top.
  • Offer Dhatura fruits and flowers, Aak flowers, white flowers, and blue flowers. These are especially dear to Lord Shiva.
  • Offer Bhang (if tradition permits), white sweets, fruits (especially ber and banana), and dry fruits as naivedya (food offering).
  • Light a five-wick ghee lamp (panchbatti diya) and offer dhoop (incense). The fragrance of loban (benzoin) is considered highly auspicious for Shiva puja.
