॥ श्री मंगलवार व्रत कथा ॥
यत्र यत्र रघुनाथकीर्तनं तत्र तत्र कृतमस्तकाञ्जलिम्।
बाष्पवारिपरिपूर्णलोचनं मारुतिं नमत राक्षसान्तकम्॥
मंगलमूर्तिर्मारुतिर्नन्दनः शक्तिपुञ्जो भक्तहितकारकः।
मंगलवारे यो भजेत् प्रीतितो हनुमान् तस्य सदा रक्षकः॥
Wherever the glory of Lord Rama is sung, there stands Maruti with folded hands and eyes brimming with tears of devotion. I bow to that Hanuman, the destroyer of demons.
Hanuman, the auspicious one, the son of Maruti, the embodiment of strength, the benefactor of devotees — whoever worships him with love on Tuesday, Hanuman forever remains his protector.

In ancient times, there lived a poor Brahmin in a small village. He was extremely impoverished and could barely feed his family. His wife was a woman of deep faith and an ardent devotee of Lord Hanuman. Every Tuesday without fail, she would observe a strict fast and worship Hanuman ji at the village temple, offering sindoor and lighting a lamp of mustard oil.
One year, a terrible famine struck the land. Crops failed, rivers dried up, and the village was gripped by hunger. The Brahmin's family had nothing left to eat. The children cried with hunger. The Brahmin, losing hope, said to his wife, “What use is this fasting and worship? We are starving despite your devotion.”
But the Brahmin's wife did not waver. On the next Tuesday, she went to the temple with an empty stomach and a full heart. She placed the last flower from her garden before Hanuman ji and prayed with tears in her eyes: “O Pavanputra! O protector of the helpless! You carried an entire mountain to save Lakshman. Will you not save my family from this famine? I do not ask for wealth — I only ask that my children do not sleep hungry.”
That night, as the exhausted woman lay sleeping, Lord Hanuman appeared in her dream. He was radiant, clad in vermillion, with a gentle smile. He spoke: “O daughter! Your devotion has pleased me greatly. I have watched your unwavering faith through years of hardship. Tomorrow at dawn, go to the old banyan tree by the dried well outside the village. Dig at the eastern side of its roots. You will find what you need.”
The woman woke with a start, her heart pounding with joy. At first light, she told her husband everything. The Brahmin was doubtful but accompanied her to the spot. Together they dug beneath the ancient banyan tree, and within arm's depth, they struck something hard. It was a large copper vessel sealed with wax, filled with gold coins bearing the image of Lord Rama.
The Brahmin fell to his knees in astonishment. His wife folded her hands toward the sky: “Jai Hanuman!”
But the story does not end with the finding of gold. The Brahmin's wife, true to her dharma, did not hoard the wealth. She first fed every hungry family in the village. She arranged for grain to be brought from the neighbouring town. She renovated the old Hanuman temple, installed a new murti, and arranged for daily puja and prasad distribution.
She established a tradition: every Tuesday, the temple would prepare food for the poor and distribute it freely. She continued her Tuesday fast with even greater devotion for the rest of her life, never missing a single week.
When the neighbouring villages heard of this miracle, many people began observing the Mangalvar Vrat. A wealthy merchant who had lost his entire fleet of ships in a storm started fasting on Tuesdays. Within three months, his lost ships returned safely with double the cargo. A childless queen who had prayed for twelve years began the Tuesday vrat on the advice of a sage. Within a year, she was blessed with a strong and virtuous son.
Lord Hanuman, pleased by the growing devotion, appeared before the Brahmin's wife one last time in her old age. He said: “Whoever observes the Mangalvar Vrat with sincerity, whoever reads or listens to this katha with devotion, whoever offers even a single flower with a true heart on Tuesday — I shall protect them from all calamities. Mars shall not trouble them. Enemies shall not prevail over them. Strength and courage shall be their companions.”
The Brahmin's wife, with tears of gratitude, said: “O Lord, you did not just save my family — you saved the entire village. This is the true power of the Mangalvar Vrat.”
Whoever reads or listens to this Mangalvar Vrat Katha with faith and devotion, and observes the Tuesday fast in honour of Lord Hanuman, shall be blessed with strength, prosperity, protection from enemies, and freedom from the malefic effects of Mangal Graha.
॥ Mangalvar Vrat Katha Sampurna ॥
जहाँ जहाँ रघुनाथ जी का कीर्तन होता है, वहाँ वहाँ हाथ जोड़े, भक्ति के अश्रुओं से नेत्र भरे, राक्षसों का नाश करने वाले मारुति खड़े रहते हैं। ऐसे हनुमान जी को नमन।
मंगलमूर्ति, मारुतिनंदन, शक्ति के पुंज, भक्तों का हित करने वाले — जो प्रेम से मंगलवार को उनकी पूजा करता है, हनुमान सदा उसके रक्षक बने रहते हैं।

प्राचीन काल में एक छोटे से गांव में एक निर्धन ब्राह्मण रहता था। वह अत्यंत दरिद्र था और अपने परिवार का पेट भरने में भी असमर्थ था। उसकी पत्नी गहरी आस्था वाली स्त्री थी और भगवान हनुमान की परम भक्त थी। वह प्रत्येक मंगलवार बिना नागा व्रत रखती और गांव के मंदिर में हनुमान जी की पूजा करती — सिंदूर चढ़ाती और सरसों के तेल का दीपक जलाती।
एक वर्ष भयंकर अकाल पड़ा। फसलें नष्ट हो गईं, नदियां सूख गईं और गांव भूख की चपेट में आ गया। ब्राह्मण के परिवार के पास खाने को कुछ भी नहीं बचा। बच्चे भूख से रोते थे। ब्राह्मण ने निराश होकर पत्नी से कहा, “इस व्रत और पूजा का क्या लाभ? तुम्हारी भक्ति के बावजूद हम भूखे मर रहे हैं।”
परन्तु ब्राह्मण की पत्नी विचलित नहीं हुई। अगले मंगलवार को वह खाली पेट किन्तु भरे हृदय से मंदिर गई। उसने अपने बगीचे का अंतिम फूल हनुमान जी के चरणों में रखा और अश्रुपूर्ण नेत्रों से प्रार्थना की: “हे पवनपुत्र! हे दीनों के रक्षक! आपने लक्ष्मण जी को बचाने के लिए पूरा पर्वत उठा लिया था। क्या आप मेरे परिवार को इस अकाल से नहीं बचाएंगे? मैं धन नहीं मांगती — बस इतना चाहती हूं कि मेरे बच्चे भूखे न सोएं।”
उस रात थकी हुई स्त्री जब सो रही थी, तब हनुमान जी उसके स्वप्न में प्रकट हुए। वे तेजस्वी थे, सिंदूर से सुशोभित, मंद मुस्कान लिए। उन्होंने कहा: “हे पुत्री! तुम्हारी भक्ति से मैं अत्यंत प्रसन्न हूं। वर्षों की कठिनाई में भी तुम्हारी अटल श्रद्धा मैंने देखी है। कल प्रातःकाल गांव के बाहर सूखे कुएं के पास जो पुराना वटवृक्ष है, उसकी जड़ों की पूर्व दिशा में खुदाई करो। तुम्हें जो चाहिए वह मिलेगा।”
स्त्री चौंककर जागी, हृदय आनंद से धड़क रहा था। भोर होते ही उसने पति को सब बताया। ब्राह्मण को संदेह था, किन्तु वह पत्नी के साथ उस स्थान पर गया। दोनों ने मिलकर प्राचीन वटवृक्ष के नीचे खुदाई की और हाथ भर गहराई में ही उन्हें कुछ कठोर वस्तु मिली। वह मोम से मुहरबंद एक बड़ा तांबे का बर्तन था, जो श्रीराम की आकृति वाले स्वर्ण सिक्कों से भरा हुआ था।
ब्राह्मण आश्चर्य से घुटनों पर गिर पड़ा। उसकी पत्नी ने आकाश की ओर हाथ जोड़े: “जय हनुमान!”
किन्तु कथा यहीं समाप्त नहीं होती। ब्राह्मण की पत्नी ने अपने धर्म के अनुसार धन संग्रह नहीं किया। उसने सबसे पहले गांव के हर भूखे परिवार को भोजन कराया। उसने पड़ोसी नगर से अनाज मंगवाने की व्यवस्था की। उसने पुराने हनुमान मंदिर का जीर्णोद्धार कराया, नई मूर्ति स्थापित की और नित्य पूजा तथा प्रसाद वितरण की व्यवस्था की।
उसने एक परंपरा स्थापित की: प्रत्येक मंगलवार को मंदिर में गरीबों के लिए भोजन बनाकर निःशुल्क वितरित किया जाए। उसने जीवन भर और भी अधिक भक्ति से मंगलवार का व्रत जारी रखा, एक भी सप्ताह नहीं चूकी।
जब पड़ोसी गांवों ने इस चमत्कार की बात सुनी तो अनेक लोगों ने मंगलवार व्रत प्रारंभ किया। एक धनी व्यापारी जिसके जहाज तूफान में नष्ट हो गए थे, उसने मंगलवार का व्रत प्रारंभ किया। तीन माह में उसके खोए हुए जहाज दोगुने माल के साथ सुरक्षित लौट आए। एक निःसंतान रानी जो बारह वर्षों से प्रार्थना कर रही थी, उसने एक ऋषि की सलाह पर मंगलवार व्रत प्रारंभ किया। एक वर्ष में उसे बलवान और सद्गुणी पुत्र की प्राप्ति हुई।
बढ़ती भक्ति से प्रसन्न होकर हनुमान जी वृद्धावस्था में ब्राह्मणी के समक्ष अंतिम बार प्रकट हुए। उन्होंने कहा: “जो कोई सच्चे मन से मंगलवार व्रत करेगा, जो इस कथा को श्रद्धा से पढ़ेगा या सुनेगा, जो मंगलवार को सच्चे हृदय से एक फूल भी अर्पित करेगा — मैं उसकी सब विपत्तियों से रक्षा करूंगा। मंगल ग्रह उसे कष्ट नहीं देगा। शत्रु उस पर विजय नहीं पा सकेंगे। बल और साहस सदा उसके साथी रहेंगे।”
ब्राह्मण की पत्नी ने कृतज्ञता के अश्रुओं से कहा: “हे प्रभु, आपने केवल मेरे परिवार को ही नहीं — पूरे गांव को बचाया। यही मंगलवार व्रत की सच्ची शक्ति है।”
जो कोई श्रद्धा और भक्ति से इस मंगलवार व्रत कथा को पढ़ता या सुनता है, और भगवान हनुमान के सम्मान में मंगलवार का व्रत रखता है, उसे शक्ति, समृद्धि, शत्रुओं से रक्षा और मंगल ग्रह के अशुभ प्रभावों से मुक्ति प्राप्त होती है।
