Guruvar (Thursday) Vrat Katha

In ancient times, there was a wealthy and powerful king whose kingdom was prosperous and happy. Once the king announced that everyone should observe the Thursday fast. The king himself also observed it. One day, the king became arrogant thinking that prosperity was due to him alone and not divine grace. From that day, the king stopped observing the Thursday fast and also forbade his subjects. Soon, famine struck the kingdom, the treasury emptied, and people became miserable.

प्राचीन समय में एक राजा था जो बहुत धनवान और प्रतापी था। उसके राज्य में सुख-समृद्धि थी। एक बार राजा ने अपने राज्य में घोषणा करवाई कि सभी लोग गुरुवार का व्रत रखें। खुद राजा भी व्रत रखता था। एक दिन राजा को अभिमान हो गया कि मेरे कारण ही राज्य में समृद्धि है, देवताओं की कृपा की क्या आवश्यकता? उसी समय से राजा ने गुरुवार का व्रत छोड़ दिया और प्रजा को भी मना कर दिया। देखते ही देखते राज्य में दुर्भिक्ष पड़ गया, राजा का खजाना खाली हो गया, प्रजा दुखी हो गई।

One day, a sage came to the kingdom. He saw the king's miserable condition and asked, 'O King, what happened?' The king narrated everything. The sage said, 'O King, you have insulted the Guru. Lord Brihaspati is displeased. If you observe the Thursday fast again and seek forgiveness, everything will be restored.' The king heeded the sage's advice and started observing the fast from the next Thursday. He wore yellow clothes, worshipped Lord Vishnu, and distributed prasad of chana dal and jaggery.

एक दिन राज्य में एक साधु आए। उन्होंने राजा की दुर्दशा देखी और पूछा, 'राजन, क्या बात है?' राजा ने सारी कथा सुनाई। साधु ने कहा, 'राजन, तुमने गुरुदेव का अपमान किया है। बृहस्पति देव रुष्ट हो गए हैं। यदि तुम पुनः गुरुवार का व्रत करो और क्षमा मांगो तो सब ठीक हो जाएगा।' राजा ने साधु की बात मानी और अगले गुरुवार से व्रत प्रारंभ किया। पीले वस्त्र पहने, विष्णु भगवान की पूजा की, चना दाल और गुड़ का प्रसाद बांटा।

Within seven Thursdays, rains came to the kingdom, crops flourished, and the treasury started filling up. People became happy again. The king understood that nothing is possible without divine grace. He resolved to observe the Thursday fast for life. Lord Brihaspati was pleased and appeared before the king. He said, 'O King, whoever observes the Thursday fast with devotion will have all desires fulfilled and will attain wealth, knowledge, children, and liberation.'

सात गुरुवार बीतते-बीतते राज्य में वर्षा हुई, फसलें लहलहा उठीं, खजाना भरने लगा। प्रजा सुखी हो गई। राजा ने समझ लिया कि देवताओं की कृपा के बिना कुछ भी संभव नहीं। उसने आजीवन गुरुवार का व्रत रखने का संकल्प लिया। बृहस्पति देव प्रसन्न हुए और राजा को दर्शन दिए। उन्होंने कहा, 'राजन, जो भी श्रद्धा से गुरुवार का व्रत करेगा, उसके सभी मनोरथ पूर्ण होंगे, उसे धन, विद्या, संतान और मोक्ष की प्राप्ति होगी।'

In a village lived a poor woodcutter. Despite being hardworking, he remained poor. One Thursday, his wife said, 'Today is Thursday, observe the fast and listen to the katha.' The woodcutter agreed. He fasted and sat under a Peepal tree in the forest, meditating on Lord Vishnu. That same day, a merchant was passing through whose cart wheel broke. The woodcutter helped him. The merchant was pleased and took the woodcutter to the city, giving him a job in his shop. Within a few years, the woodcutter himself became a wealthy merchant. He observed the Thursday fast throughout his life.

एक गांव में एक गरीब लकड़हारा रहता था। वह बहुत मेहनती था परंतु फिर भी गरीब ही रहता। एक गुरुवार को उसकी पत्नी ने कहा, 'आज गुरुवार है, व्रत रखो और कथा सुनो।' लकड़हारे ने पत्नी की बात मानी। उसने व्रत रखा, जंगल में एक पीपल के पेड़ के नीचे बैठकर विष्णु भगवान का ध्यान किया। उसी दिन जंगल में एक व्यापारी गुजर रहा था जिसकी गाड़ी का पहिया टूट गया। लकड़हारे ने उसकी मदद की। व्यापारी प्रसन्न हुआ और लकड़हारे को अपने साथ शहर ले गया, उसे अपनी दुकान में नौकरी दी। कुछ वर्षों में लकड़हारा स्वयं एक बड़ा व्यापारी बन गया। वह जीवन भर गुरुवार का व्रत करता रहा।
