Satyanarayan Vrat (most common)
Setup a kalash, Vishnu/Satyanarayan murti or photo. Offer panchamrit, banana, panchamrit prasad (banana-flour-jaggery-ghee mix). Recite the 5 chapters of Satyanarayan Katha. Distribute prasad.
Day Observance
Maintain saatvik food. No grains in some traditions; others permit one full meal. Visit a temple, give donations, feed Brahmins. Practice Vishnu Sahasranama or naam-japa.
Moonlight Offering
After moonrise, offer arghya (water libation) to the Moon. Place kheer or sweet rice in moonlight to absorb lunar nectar (especially on Sharad Purnima). View the moon with reverence — Purnima is the day to gaze at the Moon as a deity.
Charity
Donate white items: rice, milk, sugar, white cloth, silver. Feed cows. Light lamps in temple — 108 lamps is especially meritorious.
Mantras मंत्र
Sacred mantras to chant during Purnima for maximum spiritual benefit. Recite with devotion and proper pronunciation.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many Purnima are there in a year?
Typically 12 Purnimas per year — one at the end of each lunar month's Shukla Paksha. In years with Adhik Maas, there are 13 Purnimas.
What is the most important Purnima?
Guru Purnima (Ashadha) is most important for spiritual seekers. Sharad Purnima (Ashwin) for Lakshmi worship and lunar nectar. Buddha Purnima (Vaishakh) for Buddhists. Kartik Purnima for Shiva and Sikh community (Guru Nanak Jayanti).
What is Sharad Purnima kheer tradition?
On Sharad Purnima, kheer is prepared in the evening and left in moonlight overnight. The Moon is closest to Earth and its rays are believed to infuse the kheer with amrit (nectar). Eaten next morning as prasad — believed to heal asthma, respiratory issues, and bring Lakshmi's blessings.
Why is Purnima called Poornima?
Both spellings are correct transliterations of पूर्णिमा. 'Purna' = full, complete. The full moon represents fullness of consciousness, completeness of the lunar cycle, and the climax of brightness.
Should we fast on Purnima?
Yes — Purnima vrat is observed by many. Most common is Satyanarayan Vrat (one meal day, evening Satyanarayan katha). Some keep complete fast. Specific Purnimas (Guru, Sharad, Vaishakh, Kartik) have heightened observance.
