The Odia Calendar (Odia Panji) is a sidereal solar calendar used in Odisha, with 12 months named after the zodiac signs the Sun transits. The new year is celebrated as Pana Sankranti / Maha Vishuva on April 14, when the Sun enters Mesha. The Anka era (regnal year of the king of Puri) is traditionally used.

ओड़िया कैलेंडर एक सौर पद्धति है — महीने सूर्य के राशि-संक्रमण से निर्धारित होते हैं। नववर्ष पाणा संक्रांति 14 अप्रैल को मनाया जाता है।

The Odia Calendar follows the Saura (solar) tradition and is closely tied to the worship of Lord Jagannath at Puri. Unlike the lunisolar Hindu calendar, Odia months track the Sun's sidereal transit through the 12 rashis. The festival calendar of Odisha revolves around Jagannath's annual cycle — most famously the Rath Yatra (chariot festival) at Puri, attended by millions. The Odia year traditionally begins with Pana Sankranti (Maha Vishuva, April 14), though Anka system also marks the king's regnal year.

When is Pana Sankranti 2026?

Pana Sankranti 2026 (Odia New Year, also called Maha Vishuva Sankranti) falls on Tuesday, April 14, 2026 — when the Sun enters Mesha. Devotees prepare and distribute Pana (sweet jaggery-bilva drink).

When is Rath Yatra 2026 at Puri?

Rath Yatra 2026 falls on Saturday, July 18, 2026 (Ashadha Shukla Dwitiya). The 9-day festival ends with Bahuda Yatra (return chariot) on July 26, 2026.

What are the 12 Odia months?

Odia months use both Saura (solar) names and the corresponding Sanskrit lunar names: Mesha/Baisakha, Brusha/Jyestha, Mithuna/Asadha, Karkata/Sravana, Simha/Bhadraba, Kanya/Aswina, Tula/Kartika, Brushchika/Margasira, Dhanu/Pousha, Makara/Magha, Kumbha/Phalguna, Mina/Chaitra. The year begins with Mesha (April 14).

What is Raja Parba?

A unique Odia festival celebrating Mother Earth's menstruation cycle — 3 days in mid-June when agricultural activity stops. Considered a celebration of feminine fertility and a respect for Earth's natural rest. Women wear new clothes, play on traditional swings (Doli), and eat Poda Pitha.

How is the Anka year calculated?

Anka was the regnal year of the Gajapati King of Puri. The new Anka begins on Bhadraba Shukla Dwadashi (Sunia day). Year numbers follow specific rules — they skip years ending in 0 and 6 (considered inauspicious), so the count differs from regular years. Less common in modern usage.
