"The 120-Year Planetary Period System"

120 Years Universal application - suitable for all charts regardless of other factors

Overview

Vimshottari Dasha is the most widely used dasha system in Vedic astrology. It divides human life into 120 years, allocated among nine planets in a fixed sequence. The starting dasha is determined by the Moon's nakshatra at birth.

Principle
The 27 nakshatras are divided into 9 groups of 3, each ruled by a planet. The Moon's nakshatra at birth determines the starting dasha.
Etymology
Vimshottari = Vimshat (20) + Uttara (above/more) = 120 years
Usage
Universal application - suitable for all charts regardless of other factors

Calculation Method

Based on Moon's nakshatra and degree at birth

  1. 1 Identify Moon's nakshatra at birth
  2. 2 Find the ruling planet of that nakshatra
  3. 3 Calculate balance of first dasha based on Moon's position in nakshatra
  4. 4 Sequence continues in fixed order after first dasha

Balance = (Remaining nakshatra portion / 13°20') × Dasha years

If Moon is at 5° in Rohini (Moon's nakshatra, 10 years), Balance = ((13°20' - 5°) / 13°20') × 10 = 6.25 years of Moon dasha remaining

Nakshatra Span: 13°20' (800 minutes of arc)

Sub-Periods

Calculation
Proportional to main dasha years
Sequence
Same sequence as Mahadasha, starting from Mahadasha lord
Formula
Antardasha months = (Mahadasha years × Antardasha lord years) / 10

Mahadasha: Venus (20 years)

First Antardasha: Venus-Venus

Duration: (20 × 20) / 10 = 40 months = 3 years 4 months
